Description
The concept of Video Respite was originated for caregivers and their most pressing need: opportunities for respite. Respite simply means having "time away" from the many and sometimes constant demands and responsibilities of caregiving. Although the videotapes are interesting, enjoyable and likely to provide potential benefits to the viewer, the primary purpose of Video Respite is to give the caregiver an opportunity to have time for themselves. "Favorite Things" Memory impaired persons can enjoy a 33 minute simulated visit with Marilyn and talk about a variety of pleasant things. Marilyn asks questions and allows opportunities for the viewer to respond. Her questions jar memories related to several aspects of growing up such as one's hometown and parents, as well as some of the simpler things in life. The visit continues with an opportunity to sing Happy Birthday and Home on the Range. Visits are made to a vegetable garden, a dog and farm animal sounds. The viewer is invited to participate in some light hand and arm exercises that can easily be done while seated. Followed by a conversation about Christmas, and Silent Night is sung. The visit continues on several more songs and conversations.
